In a press release on 3/22/20, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced changes to the reporting requirement for providers and facilities participating in several different quality programs. The changes come in the form of exemptions and extensions in respect to the upcoming reporting and submissions deadlines for several programs, including the Merit-based Incentive Payment System, or MIPS. According to CMS Administrator Seema Verma, “In granting these exemptions and extensions, CMS is supporting clinicians fighting Coronavirus on the front lines.”
As a result of the changes, the Performance Year 2019 data submission deadlines has been extended from March 31, 2020 to April 30, 2020. In addition to the this extension, CMS has also stated that MIPS eligible clinicians who have not submitted MIPS data by Aprils 30, 2020 will automatically qualify for the adjustment for the 2021 MIPS payment year. The release goes on to say that CMS is considering options for providing relief around participation and data submission for Performance Year 2020, which providers wouldn’t be reporting until the beginning of 2021.
